My kids are messy.
And they don’t listen very well.
I could say take your shoes off before going upstairs 100 times a day and they still trek their messy butts upstairs with their shoes on.
And why do they have to walk so hard going up the stairs?
It’s like bang, bang, bang going up the stairs.
And here’s what happens:
I had already put carpet treads on the stairs because my poor little doggie kept falling down them.
But those risers!!!!
Ugh.
Just nasty.
And no matter how many times I scrubbed them, within a week they were dirty again.
Well…enough is enough…right.
It was either chop the kids feet off or find another remedy.
So that’s exactly what I did.
Not chop their feet off.
I found another remedy.
It’s amazing what you can do with an old book and some mod podge.
Just start by randomly ripping some pages out and applying a thin coat of mod podge on your stair riser.
Then put a thin coat of mod podge on the back of the book page.
Now place it on your stair riser.
There’s really no rhyme or reason as to placing them. You can overlap them or you can line them up. Just have at it.
Make sure you rub them flat and let it dry for a few minutes then apply two or three coats of mod podge right over the top of the book pages.
Let them dry between each coat.
Once all are dry spray a couple of coats of mod podge sealer over them. That will take away any stickiness. If you have a fan handy you may want to turn it on and open the doors because the sealer is pretty strong and your kids will come home from school and smell it and act like it’s killing them. Then you’ll have to listen to them complain for 2 hours.
This whole project took only about 3 hours and so far so good.
It’s been about 3 weeks now and no scuff marks!
And the kids still have their feet.
Hallelujah!

What a clever idea. Isn’t decoupage fun? It really adds a unique touuch to the front of the stairs.
